| 内容記述 | Conflicts between the Third Canton Military Government and the Canton Merchant Volunteer Corps from May through October, 1924, usually referred to as the Merchant volunteer Corps Rebellion, was an important step in the military process of the reunification of China by the Nationalist Party. Past studies on the incidents have been based on historical facts related to the activities of the government and the Nationalist Party. It has been argued that the incidents built the revolutionary class base of the Canton Government, enhanced cooperation between the Nationalist Party and the Communist Party, and started primary process of army building with the Military Academy commanded by Chiang Kai-shek. However, the activities of the Corps have been largely ignored. This essay provides a new historical implication of the ‘rebellion’. Merchant Volunteer Corps from over 100 cities and townships in the Guangdong Province established their genera1 Headquarters in August 1924. A rapid institutionalization of the Corps was taking place when they strongly opposed heavy tax policies of the government intended for the northern expedition led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The Merchant volunteer Corps began substituting various government activities in the field of public affairs such as banking and education. This was an autonomous reform of the Chinese local politics and public administration based on representation.The Canton Government seized imported arms of the Corps in August. The Corps and merchants of the city of Canton protested against this action and staged a general strike. The government troops suppressed the Merchant Corps on 15 October and set fire to the commercial areas of Canton. Institutions of the Merchant Corps were destroyed. The Canton Government failed to integrate the experience and activities of the autonomous merchants into its process of national reunification. As a result, it took a much more party-oriented and dictatorial path in its process of state building.c | |||||||||||
