In order to explore the political attitudes and actions of the Red Spears during the Sino-Japanese War, this article analyzes the relationship between the Red Spears and the political forces existing on the areas the Japanese military and the Chinese Communist Party occupied, especially focusing on changes in the relationships among various interest groups in local society.Part one provides a brief overview of Japanese government policy toward the Red Spears, pointing out that the Japanese military was finding it difficult to put them under its control.Part two discusses the C.C.P.’s strategy concerning the Red Spears. In order to mobilize and organize their members into military action against the Japanese, the C.C.P. considered the Red Spears as consisting of two parts: a revolutionary one and an anti-revolutionary one.
